Localsend

LocalSend & Website Update.

3 years of no updates on this website. This goes to show just how much has changed in the last 3 years. When I wrote the last post I was living in a different part of the country with a friend. Now I live with my partner in a completely different area working inside of a completely different role. I’ve even had multiple cars since then!

Anyway I thought I would give a little shoutout to some software I have recently discovered. That software is LocalSend.

LocalSend is essentially an open source alternative to airdrop from Apple which is available only on iOS and Mac platforms. It allows you to quickly send files across a local network easily and without having to mess with port forwarding.

The software itself is mostly OS agnostic and looks to have a client under virtually every Linux distribution aswell as *BSD, Android and Apple and Windows devices.

This isn’t really a tutorial post on how to use the software although it is quite self explanatory however I have a future blog post in mind that combines this with another bit of software I have been using called Zerotier. Pairing both software allows you to send files not only locally but to any device as long as that device is connected to a Zerotier network.

This allows you to send files securely through a VPN thus eliminating a lot of issues with having to use a third party file hosting service or setup complex solutions.

Write up to be posted soon.
